A very aggressive malware variant coined Wanna, Wannacry, or Wcry has been wreaking havoc on organizations across the globe today. The majority of the attacks have been overseas, with networks in Russia being hit most significantly, Domestically, FedEx has been affected by the malware and security experts expect the number of infections to continue to climb.
This recent malware contains ransomware, a kind of cyber attack that involves hackers taking control of a computer system and blocking access to it until a ransom is paid. Although the exact method(s) of attack have not been confirmed, there is suspicion that it may be spreading through email, in which fake invoices, job offers and other lures are being sent out to random email addresses. Within the emails is a .zip file, and once clicked that initiates the WannaCry infection.
